Canada invests USD2.7M to expand pork exports

Canadian pork producers are set to benefit from new government support aimed at strengthening their global reach. Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald announced up to USD 2.7M in funding for Canada Pork through the AgriMarketing Program. The initiative broadens market access, raises consumer awareness, and reinforces Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier.

“Canadian pork is recognized around the world for its high standards of quality, safety and production,” Mr MacDonald said. “This investment will support the sector’s ability to strengthen its position in international markets, create new opportunities for Canadian producers and processors, and contribute to a strong and resilient food system.”

Asia remains the growth engine

Asia continues to be central to Canada’s pork export strategy. Japan, China, and South Korea are among the top five destinations, reflecting strong demand for high‑quality protein. Together with the US and Mexico, these markets account for 83% of Canada’s pork export volume. In 2025, exports reached USD 4.0B, underscoring the sector’s global footprint.

Trade missions, business meetings, and participation in major Asian food shows will help exporters build direct ties with buyers and strengthen long‑term relationships. With 65% of Canadian pork production shipped abroad each year, the industry depends on international demand, and Asia’s appetite for reliable protein makes it indispensable.

Verified Canadian Pork builds trust

The Verified Canadian Pork brand highlights quality, food safety, animal care, and traceability. Promoting this brand in Asia helps differentiate Canadian pork from competitors and reassures consumers in markets where reliability is critical. Recognition of these standards strengthens confidence and supports sustained growth.

This investment is part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a USD 2.5B, five‑year agreement supporting competitiveness and innovation. By backing Canada Pork, the government ensures producers can seize opportunities in Asia while diversifying markets worldwide.

Industry leaders stress diversification

Hans Kristensen, Chair of Canada Pork, welcomed the announcement, noting that diversification is essential for long‑term resilience.

“Canada Pork greatly appreciates the Government of Canada’s partnership investing in the future of our industry,” he said. “Support through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriMarketing Program helps put Canadian pork at the center of the plate both in Canada and around the world. Diversification is core to [our] mandate, and this investment helps us build and maintain international markets, reach new global customers, and keep our industry strong at home.”

Canada Pork, established in 1991 by the Canadian Meat Council and the Canadian Pork Council, has long worked to strengthen the sector’s global presence. Government backing enables the organization to expand its reach in Asia and beyond.
