The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has banned imports of pork and its derivatives from Spain after reports of African swine fever (ASF) in Barcelona.
Barantin Deputy for Animal Quarantine Sriyanto said the decision was based on an official report from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
Preventive measures and enforcement
Indonesia is not a major pork importer, thus the ban is preventive, aimed at avoiding ASF entry. The country has significant pig industries in provinces like Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, North Sumatra, Bali, West Kalimantan, Papua, and South Sulawesi.
Barantin has instructed all technical units and quarantine officers to increase vigilance and tighten supervision of pork and related products from Spain.
Mr Sriyanto emphasized that pork shipments found entering from Spain will face strict quarantine measures, including rejection or destruction.
The agency will maintain the ban until WOAH declares Spain’s animal health situation recovered.
Public awareness and education
Barantin is working with relevant agencies to inform and educate the public at airports, seaports, and border crossings about ASF risks.
The agency stressed the importance of public cooperation and urged them to report suspected violations involving animal commodities.
Mr Sriyanto underlined that preventing ASF entry is vital to protect Indonesia’s pig industry and avoid wider economic consequences.
