With all cases concentrated in northern Gyeonggi province, officials are mobilizing resources to contain the deadly pig disease.

South Korea has issued a nationwide red alert following the detection of African swine fever (ASF) at a pig farm in Yeoncheon, a report by Yonhap said.
The case, confirmed on September 14, is the country’s first in two months and the fifth reported this year.
Yeoncheon is located in the northern part of Gyeonggi province, where all five ASF cases of 2025 have occurred. The previous outbreak was reported in nearby Paju in July. This regional concentration has raised concern among quarantine authorities.
Emergency measures
In response, the Central Disaster Management Headquarters imposed a 48-hour standstill order for pig farms and related facilities in Yeoncheon and surrounding areas. Movement of pigs, vehicles, and personnel is temporarily restricted to prevent further spread.
Officials have begun culling pigs at the affected farm, following standard containment procedures. Emergency quarantine measures are underway, including disinfection and epidemiological investigations.
Vice Agriculture Minister Kang Hyoung-seok urged swift and comprehensive action. He called on Gyeonggi province to mobilize all available resources.
“Every effort must be made to prevent any further spread of the disease,” he said during a disaster response meeting.
Continuing threat
ASF is a highly contagious viral disease that affects pigs. While it does not pose risk to humans, it is fatal to swine. The virus can spread through direct contact, contaminated feed, or equipment.
There is no cure for ASF, and existing vaccines have yet to prove fully effective in controlling the disease.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Surveillance and biosecurity measures have been reinforced across the region. The red alert remains in effect as officials work to contain the outbreak and protect the country’s pig population.
