Pork output rose to 5.4 million tons in 2025, but outbreaks caused sharp herd declines and boosted reliance on imported pork.

Vietnam’s swine production fared well in the first half of 2025, the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam reported. Disease control measures were effective, and market prices remained favorable, allowing producers to expand herds and sustain profits. Stable conditions encouraged investment and supported growth across farms nationwide.
ASF outbreaks and regional losses
The situation changed dramatically in the third quarter when African swine fever (ASF) spread across the country. The outbreaks caused sharp declines in herd numbers, particularly in provinces such as Cao Bang, where herds fell 20.5% year on year, Lai Chau with a 16.5% drop, and Quang Tri with a 9.7% decline.
Despite these losses, commercial enterprises and large-scale farms maintained operations by enforcing strict biosecurity measures.
Mixed outcomes across provinces
While many regions suffered, some localities recorded herd growth.
Tay Ninh reported a 19.9% increase, Gia Lai rose 13.8%, and Lam Dong grew 7.5%. These gains helped offset losses elsewhere, highlighting the uneven impact of ASF across the country.
Disease control achievements
By the end of 2025, Vietnam had eradicated porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), foot-and-mouth disease, and lumpy skin disease.
However, ASF remained active in 23 localities, and avian influenza outbreaks persisted in Ninh Binh, Quang Ngai, and Khanh Hoa.
Pork output and trade trends
Despite ASF challenges, pork output rose. In the fourth quarter, production increased 1.8% year on year to 1.35 million tons. For the full year, output grew 4% to nearly 5.4 million tons.
On the trade front, exports of fresh, chilled, or frozen pork reached 7,400 tonnes in the first 11 months, earning USD 59 million. Export volumes fell 12% compared with 2024, but values rose 12%.
Imports surged to 157,000 tons, more than 22 times export volumes and up 57% year-on-year, underscoring Vietnam’s growing reliance on foreign pork supplies.
