US pork producers push for stable trade with Philippines

The Philippines remains a vital US pork market, with imports supporting foodservice and processing sectors amid ongoing supply constraints.

US pork producers push for stable trade with Philippines

US pork producers are pressing for predictable trade policies with the Philippines, a market critical to their export strategy.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) joined Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen’s trade mission to Manila, meeting officials, processors, and producer groups. Their message: science‑based, transparent rules are essential for long‑term supply relationships.

Todd Marotz, NPPC Vice President and Wakefield Pork executive, stressed that stability encourages investment and ensures affordable pork for consumers.

“We know that businesses perform best when policies are rooted in transparency, science and predictability,” said Marotz. “Stable trade policies help advance our industry by encouraging investment, long-term supply relationships, food affordability and manufacturing competitiveness.”

Philippine pork demand remains strong

African swine fever (ASF) continues to limit local production, leaving the Philippines reliant on imports. US pork has become a vital supply source for foodservice and processing sectors, particularly in frozen and processed categories.

NPPC supports the US-Philippines Trade and Investment Framework Agreement and the Philippines’ favorable treatment under the US Generalized System of Preferences, which have expanded access and strengthened bilateral ties.

In 2025, US pork exports to the Philippines exceeded USD 133 million, underscoring the country’s role as a consistent buyer.

Rising role in Southeast Asia

Demand for affordable protein amid inflationary pressures has reinforced the Philippines’ position as a key Southeast Asian destination for US pork. Predictable trade frameworks ensure consumers have access to affordable pork while producers maintain reliable export channels.

Recent data from the US Meat Export Federation provides a mixed picture:

This shows that while June shipments slowed, overall first‑half growth underscores steady demand from Philippine buyers. Foodservice and processing sectors remain the primary drivers, reinforcing the importance of stable trade frameworks for long‑term supply relationships.

The Philippines’ expanding role also strengthens US presence in Southeast Asia, where competition from EU and regional suppliers remains strong. Stable trade rules not only secure consumer access but also reinforce the US’ long‑term position in the region’s protein markets.
