Muyuan pushes forward USD140M pig farm complex in central Vietnam

China’s pig farming giant Muyuan is moving ahead with a high-tech livestock complex in Vietnam’s central province of Gia Lai, including a large-scale pig farm and an animal feed plant.

The pig farm project was scheduled to break ground on October 11, following a meeting the previous day between Gia Lai Chairman Pham Anh Tuan and Muyuan executives to discuss investment plans and implementation.

The initial phase is designed for a capacity of 1 million pigs, with the scale expected to increase to 2 million pigs over the next five years.

The complex will be located in Po To commune and integrate feed production, livestock farming, processing, and product distribution.

In early August, the Gia Lai government approved Thinh Phat–Muyuan Gia Lai Co, a subsidiary of Muyuan Vietnam, as the investor for the two projects.

The pig farm will cover more than 106ha and is designed to accommodate 16,200 breeding sows and 209,000 pigs per production cycle. With an estimated 2.17 cycles annually, the project has a total investment of about USD 119.7 million.

The animal feed plant will span 6.5ha, with an annual production capacity of 360,000 tons of complete feed, powdered and pelleted feed, and premixes. The plant carries an investment of USD 19.88 million.

Total investment in the two projects amounts to USD 139.6 million. Both projects are expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2028.

The provincial government urged the Chinese firm to mobilize resources and ensure safe construction, with a target of completing and inaugurating the pig farm after 12 months of construction.

Province stresses environmental safeguards

At the October 10 meeting, Muyuan CEO Gao Tong expressed confidence in Gia Lai’s investment potential and said the group would accelerate project implementation, apply advanced technologies, and prioritize environmental protection. The company aims to make the complex a model for its operations in Vietnam.

Muyuan also sought provincial support in securing land, electricity and water supplies, developing essential infrastructure, and speeding up administrative procedures.

Gia Lai Chairman Pham Anh Tuan welcomed the group’s investment plans, citing its scale and experience in high-tech livestock farming, circular-economy models, and environmental management.

However, Mr Tuan emphasized that environmental protection must be a top priority, particularly in the treatment of solid waste and wastewater and the control of odors from large-scale livestock operations.

The provincial government would not trade environment for economic growth, he said, calling on Muyuan to implement advanced technologies and comprehensive environmental management procedures throughout the projects’ operating life.
