The Philippine meat industry is being urged to strengthen its resilience through deeper private sector involvement, with innovation, sustainability, and partnerships seen as critical foundations.
At the 37th anniversary of the Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc in Cebu City, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr emphasized that government programs alone cannot rebuild the livestock sector. He pointed to recurring outbreaks of African swine fever and avian influenza, rising production costs, and climate risks as persistent threats requiring joint action.
Tiu Laurel praised meat processors for sustaining production and protecting livelihoods despite these challenges. Their ability to transform livestock into affordable, safe products has helped stabilize supply and shield consumers from price shocks.
He stressed that collaboration between government and private enterprises is essential to overcoming disease outbreaks and supply chain disruptions. Strong partnerships, he said, will anchor the industry’s ability to adapt and grow.
Mr Tiu Laurel urged companies to invest in automation, digitalization, traceability systems, and smart manufacturing. These tools improve efficiency, strengthen food safety, and enhance global competitiveness.
Technology is not only about productivity but also about consumer trust. Transparent and accountable systems will determine the industry’s long-term success. By adopting modern practices, processors can better respond to disease outbreaks and supply chain shocks.
Beyond modernization, Mr Tiu Laurel highlighted the need for responsible resource management and climate resilience. Volatile conditions demand sustainable practices to ensure long-term stability.
The Department of Agriculture continues to expand swine recovery and poultry development programs while strengthening biosecurity protocols and veterinary services. However, rebuilding the sector cannot depend solely on government intervention. Progress requires strong partnerships with industry stakeholders.
The meat processing sector has become a pillar of national food security, helping stabilize supply, moderate prices, and ensure Filipino families have access to safe and nutritious protein.
Maintaining high standards of food safety, transparency, and accountability will be essential to preserving consumer trust. A resilient meat industry is vital to protecting livelihoods and securing the country’s food future.
